In 1999, American Movie Classics hired legendary horror director Roger Corman to host its annual Monsterfest, a week long celebration of monster movies at the end of October. Monster fest ‘99 was the first big Monster fest (AMC had two or three previous marathons, but nothing this big). As a fan of Godzilla movies, Monsterfest 1999 was awesome, with AMC airing Godzilla films all day on October 30th with several other Japanese monster movies on Halloween (alongside some Roger Corman classics).
This video is mostly advertisements leading up to an early morning airing of Toho’s “Rodan” on Halloween. Back in the day, AMC was commercial free, only airing adverts relating to their own programming. Some of the programming here is very interesting (including some stuff you’d never see on AMC nowadays). As with my other Monsterfest videos, I deleted the clip of Roger Corman’s “The Phantom Eye”.
It will also be of interest to kaiju fans that AMC aired the Sandy Frank dub of “Gamera” right after this, even though Roger Corman introduces the film as “Gammera (sic) the Invincible”, which is the heavily-edited American version.
Keep watching for more Monsterfest (including more clips from 1999 and some segments from Monsterfest 2000) and more monster videos!
